A Book of English Clocks
A rare 'History of English Clocks' hardback, published in 1947. Edited by Nikolaus Pevsner with cover design by renowned illustrators Clifford and Rosemary Ellis.
A fascinating and informative account of English clocks. Wonderful illustration to front cover of Father Time and further illustration to the back -see photos.
Inscribed Richard Davison, Belford, 1947 by hand. Photograph attached to inside front and back cover together with handwritten notes of owners' clocks by Deodatus Threkeld, Newcastle 1657/53-formerly at Nunwick Hall and an 8 day movement clock by Threkeld from c. 1702. Clearly much loved and read.
72 black & white plates, including a wonderful Table of the Equation of Days, showing how much a good pendelum watch ought to be faster or slower than a true sun dial every day of the year.
A wonderful find/gift for the horologist! As absorbing for the practitioner interested in keeping things ticking as the person with an interest in the theory.
