Victorian Violets Oil Still Life Against Muted Olive Green

Product ID: A176

An exquisite still life of violets with drinking cup, in the softest and most muted of olive green tones. Expressive and sensitive, this Victorian painting has a deeply appealing and timelessly elegant quality that is as attractive today as when it was painted around a century ago .Almost certainly dating to the late 19th/early 20th century (circa 1892) , dated 1892 to the wood stretcher .

This lovely floral study, by artist M. Potts  is beautifully executed; ingeniously capturing the delicate, honest charm of these simple, single violet blooms (in shades of blue and white) and their spoon shaped foliage. The subtle subdued tones of the painting lend it an air of calm and gentleness that is immensely appealing. Endlessly versatile this lovely painting would be at home in a multitude of places within the home from a cosy sitting room/morning room to a formal drawing room or bedroom.  Set in an aged gilded wood frame, the casual, unconsidered arrangement assumes greater significance and weight.Contrast it with a punchy modern setting, or add a note of enduring and timeless charm to an English or French/Scandinavian inspired country house or cottage.

Size & Condition:

Painted in oils on canvas over a wood stretcher, this lovely painting measures approximately 17.5ins. by 12.5ins. in it's frame. In very good vintage condition for its considerable age, the canvas has only a little loss of paint to the area in front of the cup and bottom right corner (please see photos). The frame has acquired the wonderful patina of age, dulling the gold colour to blend almost imperceptibly with the restrained olive hues of the canvas.

A truly lovely, antique still life in a gorgeously appealing colour palette.
